Vivian Vance, an Emmy Award-winning comedic and dramatic actress, died at her California home on August 17, 1979, at the age of 70. Vance was born in Cherryvale, Kansas, in 1909. She began her acting career on the New York stage, appearing in such plays as the revue Walk With Music from 1940 to 1941. In 1951 she was cast as Ethel Mertz on I Love Lucy, a role she held for six years and earned her an Emmy Award in 1956. Vance continued her career both on stage and television, appearing in roles on Broadway, The Lucy Show, and The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour. Later she made guest appearances on such hit programs as The Andy Griffith Show, McHale's Navy, and Batman. Vance retired from acting in 1978. Vance is survived by her husband, Philip Ober. She was an inspiration to all through her career and will be remembered fondly by her fans.
