Virginia Hill, the notorious gangster’s moll who had links to notorious mobsters, died at age 49 on March 24, 1966. Virginia Hill was born in 1916 in Lipscomb, Alabama. After dropping out of high school, she pursued a career in show business as a dancer. She began to make a name for herself after performing in seedy dives throughout the US. Over time, she gained a reputation as the girlfriend of many mobsters, mainly gang leader Bugsy Siegel, and would often accompany them to Hollywood parties and high-profile events. Her fame increased when she became a star witness for the prosecution in the trial of Siegel associate Mickey Cohen in 1951 and 1952. Hill was often described as a free spirit and independent woman who refused to be defined by her relationships with mobsters. After leaving the world of organized crime, she settled in Austria in 1962, where she lived a quiet life until her untimely passing. Virginia Hill will be remembered as a pioneering female figure in the mobster underworld who will not soon be forgotten.
That’s what literature is. It’s the people who went before us, tapping out messages from the past, from beyond the grave, trying to tell us about life and death! Listen to them! Connie Willis
