Vincente Minnelli, legendary film director, choreographer and art director, has died at the age of 83. Born on February 28, 1903 in Chicago, Illinois to parents Frances and Mina Le Beau Minnelli, Minnelli got his start as a dancer and appeared in small roles in a handful of early musicals, including 1933's "Reaching for the Moon". In 1941, he moved to Hollywood and began working as a contract director at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, where he helmed over a dozen musicals, romances, dramas, and comedies throughout his 25-year tenure. During this time, Minnelli helmed many iconic films such as 1944's Meet Me in St. Louis, starring Judy Garland, 1945's The Clock, 1951's An American in Paris, 1956's The Bad and the Beautiful, and 1958's Gigi. His 1954 thriller, The Band Wagon, is considered an all-time classic. Minnelli's last work was 1965's Goodbye Charlie, starring Tony Curtis and Debbie Reynolds. He won an Academy Award for Best Director for Best Director for Gigi and was awarded the French Legion of Honour in 1979. Minnelli passed away in West Hollywood, California on July 25, 1986. He is survived by his second wife, Lee Minnelli, and his daughter, Liza Minnelli.
