Vincent Thomas Lombardi, a renowned football coach and a powerful leader, passed away on September 3, 1970 at 57 years old. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he lived a life of dedication to football. An iconic figure in sports history, Vince Lombardi began his coaching career at St. Cecilia High School in Englewood, New Jersey in 1939. Later, he went on to become the assistant coach at Fordham University and West Point. In 1954, he was hired by the Green Bay Packers as their head coach. He served as head coach with the team for nine years, leading them to five NFL championships. During his time with the Packers, Vince Lombardi was named NFL Coach of the Year twice. Throughout his coaching career, Lombardi was known for his disciplined strategy and commitment to excellence. His philosophy was credited with establishing and maintaining a high standard of performance for NFL teams. He was also an influential figure in civil rights, becoming the first NFL coach to hire a full-time black assistant in 1965. After coaching the Washington Redskins from 1962-1969, Vince Lombardi retired and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971, one year after his death. He was posthumously elected to the NFL's 75th Anniversary All-Time Team in 1994. Vince Lombardi's life and legacy will continue to live on in football today, and he will be greatly missed.
