Vera Lynn, the iconic British singer, passed away on June 18, 2020, at the age of 103. Nicknamed the "Forces' Sweetheart" for her popular wartime songs, Lynn was born in London on March 20, 1917. She joined her first professional singing group when she was just seven and released her first solo recording at age 11. During World War II, Lynn toured as an entertainer performing for British troops throughout Europe, Africa, and India—the first to do so. Her song "We'll Meet Again" become a war-era anthem. In 1972, she was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for her services to entertainment. Lynn also had a successful career in films, making many appearances in musicals and variety shows. She was one of the few surviving performers from the era, and she maintained her popularity by releasing new albums as she aged. Throughout the decades, Lynn continued to grow in popularity, with her music and fame crossing continents and surviving generations, eventually winning her international fame. She will be greatly missed.
