In 2006, the world of professional boxing mourned the death of Trevor Berbick, the former World Heavyweight Champion who passed away at the age of 52. Berbick was born in Jamaica in 1954, and he began his professional boxing career in 1976. He won his first regional title in just two years, becoming the Canadian Heavyweight Champion, and subsequent successes saw him compete for major titles in 1983. In 1986, Berbick won his biggest victory when he defeated Pinklon Thomas to become the World Heavyweight Champion. Berbick participated in a series of notable boxing matches, including his legendary fight against Mike Tyson in 1986, and his win over Larry Holmes in 1986. After his retirement from professional boxing, he became a missionary and spoke frequently of his newfound religious faith, founding the “Trevor Berbick Ministries” in Hog Hole, Jamaica. Berbick was tragically killed in Jamaica on October 28th, 2006, and his legacy lives on within the boxing world. He is remembered with respect by his former opponents and friends. He will be greatly missed.
