Tony Gwynn, beloved baseball player, coach, and Hall of Fame inductee, passed away June 16th, 2014, at the age of 54. Gwynn was born Anthony Keith Gwynn in Los Angeles, CA in May of 1960. Throughout his life, he was exceptionally gifted in baseball, leading his team in all four major batting categories his senior year at San Diego State University. After college, Gwynn joined the San Diego Padres, signing a contract as the highest-paid player with the team. He stayed with them throughout his entire 20-year career. During this time, Gwynn set a National League batting record and won eight National League batting titles. He played in fifteen All-Star games and was named MVP of two of them. In 1999, Gwynn was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame with ninety-five percent of the vote. The same year, he and the Padres won the last World Series game in San Diego. After retiring, Gwynn went on to coach baseball at San Diego State University and was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame for his successes as a collegiate player. Gwynn will be remembered for his devotion to the game of baseball, his eagerness to promote the sport to the youth, and his willingness to work with Padre fans. He is survived by his wife, Alicia, his three children, his two stepchildren, and millions of admirers.
