Tommy Cooper, iconic British comedian and magician, passed away tragically on the 15th April 1984 aged 63. Born on the 19th March 1921 in Caerphilly, South Wales, Tommy was the son of a Welsh father and an English mother. His love of comedy and magic was clear from a young age, and he honed these skills throughout his early performing career in theatres and nightclubs. Cooper rose to fame in the 1950s and is remembered for his comedy catchphrases, amusing magic tricks and his legendary red fez. He was a well loved entertainer for over three decades and was a much-loved fixture of television and radio, recording over 20 specials for the BBC and ITV. During this time, he won the British Academy Television Award for Light Entertainment Performance in 1981. Tommy Cooper was said to have a wonderful sense of humour and warmth that touched everyone he met over the years. He is survived by his wife Gwen whom he married in 1954 and their two daughters Vicky and Thomasina. We will always miss the beloved comedian and magician; Tommy Cooper.
