Timothy Treadwell, 46, died on October 6, 2003. The cause of death was not immediately known. Treadwell was a naturalist and environmentalist who sought to gain understanding of wild grizzly bears by living with them in the Alaskan wilderness. With his partner Amie Huguenard, they lived among the bears for thirteen summers, spawning books and documentaries, and educating others on the plight of the northern grizzly bear. He was an advocate for the protection of the disappearing grizzly bear population, emphasizing the need for education initiatives and acceptance of the animal's place in nature rather than bigotry and hatred. Treadwell's passion and enthusiasm for the world's wild places and animals left a lasting impression on those who knew him and those who watched his works. He will be deeply missed.
Let children walk with Nature, let them see the beautiful blendings and communions of death and life, their joyous inseparable unity, as taught in woods and meadows, plains and mountains and streams of our blessed star, and they will learn that death is stingless indeed, and as beautiful as life.
