On May 31, 1996, Dr. Timothy Leary, 1975-1996, passed away at the relatively young age of 75. His life was full of accomplishments and groundbreaking moments, which left indelible marks on human culture and expanded our understanding of the world around us. As a doctor of psychology, Leary gained renown by making important contributions to the field and encouraging radical departures from the norm in the 1950s. He understood that drugs - traditionally considered a social taboo - could be used effectively in psychological research, thus leading to his legendary exploration of psychedelics. Throughout his life, he often found himself embroiled in controversy as his philosophies opposed those of mainstream society. This often led to societal pushback, some criminalizing Leary’s activities. However, his unwavering commitment to the cause of exploring the human mind’s potential earned him a considerable sphere of influence and a reputation as an icon of the counterculture. Dr. Leary left a treasure trove of written works, including his philosophic reflections which can still be found in books and online. Additionally, he left behind his Guests of the Nation sculptures, which incorporated elements of his beliefs, as physical reminders of his life and its accomplishments. Dr. Leary’s family, friends, fans, and colleagues take solace in the knowledge that he lived life to its fullest and followed his instincts and beliefs unceasingly.
