With profound sadness, the world mourns the passing of Terry Funk, a wrestling legend, on August 23, 2023 at age 79. Terry left an indelible mark on professional wrestling for more than five decades, during which he established himself as one of the greatest and most controversial competitors in history. He was born in Hammondville, Texas. After graduating from West Texas State University, Terry started his career in 1965. He initially wrestled across the Midwest and Northeastern United States for various promotions under the NWA banner. In 1975, Terry joined the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) as "The Texas Outlaw" and quickly received international exposure through appearances on The Tomorrow Show and Wide World of Sports. However, it was his re-emergence in WCW in the late 1990s that solidified his legacy. From there, Terry competed in ECW and on the independent circuit, and also competed overseas. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2009 and was the inaugural inductee into the Hardcore Hall of Fame in 2018. During his career, Terry won numerous championships, such as the NWA United State Heavyweight Championship, NWA Western States Heritage Championship, NWA North American Heavyweight Championship, and ECW World Television Championship. The unwavering commitment to excellence and longevity of his storied career has influenced generations of wrestlers. He was a larger-than-life figure, and will always be remembered as the "Funkster" and the "Chainsaw Charlie" whose signature moves, charisma, and fearlessness entertained fans for decades.
