Today, on 8th May 1995, Teresa Teng, beloved singer from Taiwan and internationally renowned artist, passed away at the age of 42. Teresa Teng was born in Taiwan in 1953 and her musical career began when she was at a young age. Her first major album was released to widespread critical acclaim in 1973, and she quickly gained a following that spread globally. Her influence extended far beyond her homeland, as her fans throughout greater China and Southeast Asia recognized her unique voice, as well as her distinct style. Her success reached its peak in the late 1970s, when she became the first ever overseas Chinese artist to sign with Japan Victor Music Industries. That era saw her singing a mix of Taiwanese, Hong Kong and Japanese pop tunes, which earned her an immense fan base. Her ability to sing songs in multiple languages, coupled with her characteristic charm, made her the most successful Chinese-language singer for many years. Though her work throughout her career was sometimes overshadowed by political controversy, her powerful lyrics and rousing music always resonated with fans. Her lasting legacy will be remembered by millions of people around the world. Teresa was preceded in death by her mother and father.
