Tenzing Norgay, who died at the age of 71 on May 9th, 1986, was a Nepalese Sherpa mountaineer who, with his partner Edmund Hillary, became the first known climbers to successfully summit Mount Everest in 1953. A humble and kind man, Tenzing Norgay was born in Bukpa, a small village on the Bhote Kosi River in North-Eastern Nepal. He was the 11th of 13 children, and was raised by his father and stepmother as his mother died shortly after he was born. At the age of 19 Tenzing left his home to join a contingent of Sherpas who were going to Darjeeling, India. He worked with the Tibetans trading in yak butter and salt, until 1935 when he became involved with the British headed Everest expeditions that were known at the time. Throughout his career as a mountaineer and expeditioner, he took part in several Himalayan expeditions to conquer various peaks, and eventually achieved his dream of reaching the summit of Everest in 1953. Tenzing Norgay's lifelong passion for the mountains, and his legacy of courage, determination, and perseverance live on despite his death. He will be remembered for his impressive accomplishments, as well as his humble demeanor.
