Tennessee Williams (March 26, 1914 - February 25, 1985) passed away on February 25, 1985 at the age of 70. He was best known for his widely successful and critically acclaimed plays, many of which were adapted into movies. Williams was born in Columbus, Mississippi. His mother was an aspiring poet and his father was a traveling salesman. He grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, and often escaped from his rural, working class upbringing by becoming absorbed in books. Williams won two Pulitzer prizes for his works: A Streetcar Named Desire in 1948 and Cat On A Hot Tin Roof in 1955. He went on to write many more successful plays, including The Glass Menagerie, Night of the Iguana, and Sweet Bird of Youth. He also wrote a number of short stories, which were mostly autobiographical in nature. He will be remembered for his deep exploration of both beauty and darkness in the human spirit. His work will continue to inspire readers and audiences for generations to come.
