On October 30, 2016, renowned Broadway, film, and television actress Tammy Grimes passed away at the age of 82 in New York City. She was born in Lynn, Massachusetts in 1934, to Eola Willard, a lyric soprano with the Metropolitan Opera Company, and Luther Nichols Grimes, a machinist. After obtaining a Bachelor’s degree from Albright College, Grimes moved to New York City to pursue an acting career. She soon found Broadway success with her Tony Award-winning performance in The Unsinkable Molly Brown in 1960. During the course of her illustrious career, Grimes appeared in more than 20 Broadway productions, and made her London theater debut in 1965 in Galatoire's Gulls. On the big screen, she featured in several films, including the 1966 cult classic, The Jungle Book, and The Trip, which she won a Golden Globe Award for best actress. On television, Grimes made her debut in 1962 with an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jack Paar. She also had a regular role on NBC’s The U.S.M.C., which ran from 1965 to 1966, and starred on the daytime drama Search for Tomorrow from 1975 to 1976. Grimes was the recipient of numerous awards over the course of her career, including the Obie Award, the Drama Desk Award, two Tony Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, and a British Academy Award. She remained active in the acting world until her passing. Tammy Grimes will be greatly missed by her surviving family and friends.
