Tallulah Bankhead, the acclaimed film and stage actress renowned for her husky voice and outrageous life, has died at the age of 66 on December 12, 1968. Born in Huntsville, Alabama in 1902, she attended Convent of the Sacred Heart in Manhattan and later the Linear School in London before embarking on an acting career that spanned from 1920 to 1967. Bankhead first starred in silent films, but it was her transition to Broadway that truly showcased her talents as an actor and garnered her international fame. Bankhead starred in a variety of acclaimed plays, both classic and modern, such as Eugene O'Neill's Ah, Wilderness! and Tennessee Williams's The Little Foxes, as well as several of her own works. She also appeared in films throughout her career, including Alfred Hitchcock's Lifeboat (1944), Storm Warning (1951), and My Friend Irma Goes West (1950), among others. Bankhead's personal life was often the subject of gossip columnists, and her outrageous behaviour earned her the nicknames "The Alabama Entertainer" and "The Banshee". Her legacy as an actress and larger-than-life figure will often be remembered.
