Syd Barrett, born Roger Keith Barrett, passed away on July 7, 2006, in Cambridge, England. He was 60 years old. Barrett was a pioneering rock guitarist, singer and songwriter best known for being a founding member of the influential psychedelic rock band Pink Floyd, of which he was the lead vocalist and primary songwriter until 1968. He went on to solo work, releasing two albums, The Madcap Laughs (1970) and Barrett (1970). Barrett's influence on music, including rock, punk, and alternative, was immense, and he is fondly remembered for his songwriting, skills as a guitarist, and iconic stage presence. Outside of music, Barrett had a wide range of interests including painting, poetry, Eastern religions, and philosophy. Barrett is survived by his siblings Rosemary, Alan, and Jim. He will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and legions of fans around the world.
