Susan Denise Atkins, born on May 7th, 1948 in San Gabriel, California, passed away on September 24th, 2009. She grew up in California, attended school in the San Fernando Valley, then worked in a variety of professions, including as a topless dancer, before eventually finding work at a topless bar in Berkeley, California. Atkins was known to her friends and family as "Sadie Mae Glutz", a nickname taken on shortly after meeting fellow cult member Charles Manson in 1967. She was a devoted follower of the Bettye Ford School of Dance Arts, which she attended for over three years. In 1969, Susan Atkins was convicted of first-degree murder and seven counts of conspiracy to commit murder for her role in the murder of Sharon Tate. She was sentenced to death, but this was later commuted to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Atkins spent the rest of her life in prison in California until her passing on September 24th, 2009. Atkins is remembered by her family and friends as a loving daughter, sister, and grandmother. She is survived by her mother, four children, eleven grandchildren, and numerous extended family members.
