Suraiya, an Indian actress and playback singer, passed away on 2004-01-31 at the age of 74. She was born in Hyderabad to parents Faiz Ali Khan and Azurunissa. Suraiya was an influential presence in the Indian film industry for more than three decades. She started her career in 1937 and starred in romantic musical films such as Gaon ki Gori, Dil ka Haal,and Anmol Ghadi. Suraiya became a popular figure in the 1940s-1950s, thanks to her extraordinary acting and singing talent and her physically striking person. Her unforgettable performances as a heroine and a character actress led to her acting in over 19 films. Despite her illustrious career, Suraiya decided to retire in 1964. She declined a Padma Shri Award in the year 1992 and refused further official honours. Suraiya will always remain an iconic figure in the Indian film industry, not just for her performances but also for her role in the direction and popularity of modern Indian cinema.
