Sunderlal Bahuguna (1926-2021), a pioneering environmentalist and renowned face of India's Chipko Movement passed away in Delhi on May 21, 2021 at the age of 94. Born to Bhimsen Bahuguna and Chandra Devi in UP’s Tehri Garhwal, Bahuguna was a great inspiration to the generations for his activism and dedication to promoting ecology and preserving the environment. He was an alumnus of Allahabad University where he graduated in science in 1950. Bahuguna’s fight for protecting forests began after witnessing extensive deforestation in the Himalayan belt and his aim to shut down the eco-damaging mechanized logging in the region is said to have inspired the iconic Chipko Movement of late 70s. In 1981, he started the Chipko Andolan which used Gandhian principles of peaceful resistance to protect the trees. He championed various people-centric environment initiatives including the protest against the construction of the Tehri Dam on the Bhagirathi River in Uttarakhand resulting in the project’s stalling for many years. Bahuguna was an ardent advocate of protecting the Himalayan mountain ranges, rivers, and forests and he served as bond between the people of the mountains and the plains. Through his tireless work, he proved that whether it’s saving forests or safeguarding ecology, individuals can bring a meaningful change. Thereafter his preservation ideas gained much public acclaim and also seen as a blueprint for environment-oriented policies. Bahuguna was a Padma Vibhushan awardee and a lifetime campaigner for ecological preservation. He will always be remembered for his unstoppable dedication to promote traditional people-based practices and teachings, which strongly advocates nature conservation. He is survived by his three sons, two daughters and their families.
