Suharto, Indonesia's long-time president, died on January 27, 2008 at the age of 86 after a period of ill health. He served as president for more than three decades, from 1967 until 1998. During his time in office, Suharto reformed and modernized the economy, and brought forth much economic progress, educational development, and infrastructure growth. He also played a leading role in regional and global affairs. Suharto saw Indonesia through the Cold War and the end of the twentieth century. His contributions to his country will be remembered.
