On May 30, 1975, Steve Prefontaine, the legendary American middle and long-distance runner, passed away at the age of 24. Before his death, Prefontaine had become a global icon in track and field. He attended the University of Oregon, where he won three NCAA titles, and set American records in seven different track events. He was the first athlete to break the 4-minute mark for the indoor mile run. His accomplishments also included four national titles, eight national records, and the fifth fastest performance ever in the 5,000 meter run. At the 1972 Munich Olympics, Prefontaine finished fourth in the 5,000 meter race, but went on to become a symbol for the sport. He took up the cause of amateur athletes' rights and believed firmly that they should be able to control their own destinies. Steve Prefontaine will be remembered for having a powerful influence on American long-distance running. He touched the lives of thousands of people around the world and inspired many to pursue their dreams. His legacy will live on for years to come.
