On February 23, 1942, Austrian author and playwright Stefan Zweig passed away at the age of 60. Born in 1881 in Vienna, Zweig was dubbed the 'prince of letters' for his prolific writing career. He was best known for novellas and short stories, but also wrote plays, book reviews, biographies and essays. Though his writing was popular throughout Europe in the interbellum period, he was driven into exile by Austria's 1938 Anschluss with Nazi Germany. During his exile, Zweig permanently settled in Brazil. He continued writing, producing his autobiography 'The World of Yesterday' in his final years. Zweig's works are held in high regard to this day, and have been translated into more than 40 languages worldwide. He is remembered for his humanistic outlook, elegant literary style and thought-provoking perspectives on literature, politics and emotion.
