Stanley “Tookie” Williams, co-founder of the Crips gang, passed away on December 13, 2005, at 51 years old. Williams was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on December 29, 1953. He grew up and spent most of his life in South Los Angeles, where he co-founded the Crips gang in 1971. In 1981, Williams was convicted of four murders and sentenced to death. Williams was unanimously denied clemency by the governor of California, ultimately leading to his execution. Williams showed his ability to change and reform during his tenure in prison, working to unite Crips and Bloods and end gang violence. Williams won several awards for his work, including the Nobel Peace Prize nomination, and wrote several children’s books. Those close to him remembered Williams as a kind, wise, and empowering figure who had an incredible influence on many throughout his life. He will be deeply missed.
