Stanley Baldwin, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1923 to 1937, passed away on December 14, 1947 at the age of 80. Baldwin was born in Burnt End, England in 1867 and graduated from Harvard University in 1889. He was the Deputy Lieutenant of Worcestershire from 1895 to 1899 and was elected MP for Bewdley in 1908, a post he held for 20 years. During his lifetime, he served as a government minister in various portfolios, including Financial Secretary to the Treasury, President of the Board of Trade, and Home Secretary before his appointment as Prime Minister in 1923. Baldwin held the post for two more terms, acting as leader of the Conservative party in the 1924 and 1929 elections. In 1935, he was made a Knight Grand Cross of the Bath. In 1937, after a succession of illnesses, he retired from politics. The government for which he was responsible was later remembered as the “moral government”. His body will be laid to rest in Astwood, near Worcester. He is survived by his wife Lucy Baldwin and their four children.
