Stanislav Petrov, born on September 7, 1939, passed away on Monday, May 19th, 2017 at his home in Moscow, Russia. He was 77 years old. Stanislav was a lieutenant colonel of the Soviet Air Defence Forces who had a major part in preventing a potential nuclear war in 1983. He is credited with saving the world from a nuclear holocaust when he made the crucial decision to not escalate the international crisis that ensued when a Soviet early-warning system identified a number of American nuclear missiles headed to the USSR. Stanislav Petrov maintained that his seminal act of peace was more of a “lucky guess” than a heroic act but his veteran colleagues, of which there were few, knew that he had reacted with an almost superhuman quickness that had saved the lives of countless Russians and Americans alike. His bravery will never be forgotten. He is survived by his family and loved ones. Stanislav Petrov will be deeply missed by all who knew him. May he rest in peace.
