Shinzo Abe, Japan's longest-serving prime minister, died on July 8, 2022 at the age of 67. Prime Minister Abe was known for his commitment to furthering Japan's security and economic interests on the world stage, as well as his commitment to transforming Japan's society through long-term reform. Prime Minister Abe was first elected in 2006 and served three non-consecutive terms, beginning his third term in 2019. He was Japan's longest-serving Prime Minister, entering office for his first term in 2006, and coaching the role over the course of 1,899 days in total. During his time as Prime Minister, Abe was a proponent of the Japan-U.S. security alliance, focusing heavily on national security and military presence in East Asia. His signature policies included Abenomics, a three-pronged economic plan aimed at stimulating Japan’s economy; the Osaka Declaration, which gave the Prime Minister more power when negotiating international agreements; and Japan’s acceptance of more foreign workers. Prime Minister Abe was an internationally recognized figure, and was admired for his tenure in office and resolute leadership. He was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays on a Neck Ribbon, in 2020. He is survived by his wife, Akie Abe.
