American puppeteer, musician, and author Shari Lewis passed away on August 2nd, 1998, at the age of 65. Born on January 17, 1933 in New York City to Russian immigrants, Shari received her BA from Hofstra University and her MA from Hunter College. Shari began her career as a puppeteer in the 1950s, and soon became well-known for her performances and television specials. She was best known for her work with her beloved puppet Lamb Chop. In 1957, Shari won an Emmy for Outstanding Performance in a Variety or Musical Program for The Shari Lewis Show. She won another Emmy in 1991 for Outstanding Writing in a Children’s Series. Shari also wrote several children’s books, including the popular Lamb Chop series. Shari’s legacy will live on through her many works, including her most famous character, Lamb Chop, who was featured in dozens of television specials and appearances.
