On April 22, 1966, Sepp Dietrich passed away at the age of 73. He was known for his service in World War I, as well as his role in Nazi Germany. Dietrich enlisted for military service in 1911, and quickly rose through the ranks to Oberst (colonel) of the Imperial German Army. During World War I, he saw active service at the battles of the Somme, Ypres, Verdun and the Marne, as well as on the Italian Front. In 1933, he joined the Nazi Party, and was appointed commander of the SS Leibstandarte division. In this position, he was responsible for protecting Adolf Hitler personally, as well as leading several operations during World War II. He was one of the key figures in the implementation of the Nuremberg Laws in 1935. Dietrich was eventually arrested in 1945 and charged with war crimes. While charges were eventually dropped and he was released in 1953, he was never pardoned and remained a tried and convicted criminal until the end of his life. Sepp Dietrich was a decorated soldier and influential figure in Nazi Germany. He passed away at the age of 73, leaving behind a rich history of service and sacrifice.
