Riina led a reign of terror that included dozens of murders and political assassinations as well as a long-running turf war with the government. Riina was eventually arrested in 1993 after more than two decades as a fugitive, and he was sentenced to life in prison in 1995. He spent the remainder of his life behind bars, and died in a hospital in Rome on November 17, 2017.
