On January 23, 1989, the renowned Spanish surrealist painter Salvador Dalí died in his home outside of Figueres, Spain. He was 84 years old. Dalí was born in 1904 in Spain and is renowned for his surrealist works. His paintings feature his bizarre dream imagery and numerous optical illusions, as well as an almost theatrical bravura that brought much attention to his works. He was also known for his devotion to the mystique of self-promotion, and was heavily involved in a variety of public projects throughout his lifetime. Dalí was influential in some of the great artistic movements of the 20th century, including Surrealism and Pop Art. His works have been revered and sought after, with some of his most famous pieces including The Persistence of Memory, The Ecumenical Council, and Soft Construction with Boiled Beans. His works are in a variety of locations around the world, including at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and the Salvador Dalí Theatre-Museum in Spain. Throughout his lifetime, Dalí received multiple awards, including the Grand Cross of the Order of Isabella in 1982 and the Commander with Star of the Order of Arts and Letters in 1966. His works have been lauded by many and will be remembered as a cornerstone for surrealism for many years to come.
