Sacheen Littlefeather (1947-2022), an American actress and political activist best known for her activism involving Native American civil rights, passed away at the age of 75 on October 2nd, 2022. Born Maria Cruz in Española, New Mexico on February 15, 1947, Sacheen rose to prominence in the early 1970s when she appeared as an Apache woman in a television show. While Sacheen was most widely known for her appearance on screen, she was widely recognized for her advocacy for Native American civil rights, beginning in 1972. She refused an invitation to the Academy Awards that year after being asked to accept on Marlon Brando’s behalf and instead spoke in front of hundreds of photographers and television cameras in support of the American Indian Movement’s call for the federal government to honor its treaties with Native Americans and respect their lands. She continued her activism over the years and later became the president of the National Indian Education Association, working to improve both education and the socio-economic conditions of Native Americans. Sacheen is survived by her sons, Hawk Littlefeather, Scout Littlefeather, and Lou Ventura, as well as her seven grandchildren and her siblings, all of whom she loved deeply. She will be remembered as a courageous voice for her people and for the social justice movements of which she was a part.
