Rutger Hauer, 75, died peacefully on Thursday, July 19, 2019. He is remembered as an accomplished Dutch actor, best known for his roles in Blade Runner, Escape from Sobibor, and any number of European films. He was born in Breukelen, Utrecht, Netherlands on January 23, 1944. Hauer began his career on the stage, before making his transition to film in the late sixties. He rose to international prominence with a starring role in 1982's Blade Runner, and he continued to work in film for decades afterwards. In 1993, he won a Golden Globe for his performance in Escape from Sobibor. Hauer was also a philanthropist, working to end homelessness and raise awareness about the importance of sustainability. He is survived by his wife Ineke ten Cate; his son Valerio Morigi Hauer and daughter Aysha Hauer; and his grandchildren: Yassuo, Kai, Cara, and Tuyet. He will be remembered as a beloved actor, humanitarian, and family man.
