Russell Means, a legendary Native American leader, activist, and actor, passed away on October 22, 2012 at the age of 72. Born on November 10, 1939 in Porcupine, South Dakota, Russell was a member of the Oglala Lakota tribe and the rendering of Ogle Tanka Ubangi. He was known for his passionate activism and dedication to Native American rights, and was well-recognized for his involvement in the 1973-1976 protest of the US government seizure of the sacred Black Hills of South Dakota as well as his part in the Wounded Knee Incident. He was also a successful actor in films such as The Last of the Mohicans and Natural Born Killers. Also, as a member of the American Indian Movement in the 1960's, he was the spokesperson for the tribe during civil rights demonstrations and negotiations with President Richard Nixon. He will be remembered for his dedication to protecting the Native American culture and fighting for their civil rights, and will be deeply missed by many.
