Roy Sullivan (1912–1983), U.S. Park Ranger, passed away on September 28, 1983, at age 71. Sullivan was born in York County, Virginia on February 7, 1912. Roy’s career in the U.S. parks service began in 1936 as a lookout at Shenandoah National Park, where he received his first lightning strike. His travels took him across the country, and during his forty-seven-year career he was struck by lightning seven more times. His last station was at the national park in Steven's Gap, Virginia, where he retired after 28 years of service. In addition to his lightning strikes, Sullivan is remembered for helping rural fire departments put out fires in the national park and for his heroism in protecting visitors from park wildlife. He was an active member of the Shenandoah Valley Baptist Church, where he served as an elder for 25 years. He was also a life member and commander of the local VFW unit. Roy is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy, and his two sons, Thomas and Robert. He will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.
