Roy Scheider, an award-winning actor in the 1970s, passed away on February 10th, 2008 at the age of 75. Born in Orange, New Jersey, Scheider started his career on Broadway before appearing in television films and shows such as Naked City, Route 66, and The Defenders. Scheider became an iconic figure for his leading role as Police Chief Martin Brody in the 1975 blockbuster Jaws, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Actor in a Supporting Role. He also starred in the well-received thriller All that Jazz, directed by Bob Fosse, and a wide array of other films including The French Connection II, Still of the Night, and The Punisher. His last appearence was in the 2007 film The Poet. Throughout his career he won several awards, such as a Golden Globe in 1979 for All That Jazz, Best Actor in a Motion Picture Awards at the 1983 Cannes Film Festival, and an Emmy nomination for his role in the 1993 ABC television movie The Deputy. At the time of his death, Scheider was survived by his partner Brenda Siemer and their adopted daughter Molly; his two children, actress Christian Scheider and director Max Scheider; and his first wife, actress Cynthia Bebout.
