Roxie Roker, an actor and entertainment industry veteran, died on December 2, 1995. She was 66. Roker was best remembered for her work on the classic sitcom The Jeffersons and as a mainstay in the Los Angeles entertainment scene. Born to Bahamian immigrant parents in New York City, Roker graduated from Howard University and went on to become a pioneering figure for Black women in television. She was cast in a walking role on the series Adam’s Rib, before making history as the first Black cast member of The Jeffersons when it premiered in 1975. Roker's career also included numerous film, television, and theater roles and appearances, including Cameo appearances in Good Times and its spin-off Checking In, LA Law, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Empty Nest, 227, and Beverly Hills 90210. Roker was married twice and is survived by her son, the actor Lenny Kravitz, her daughter, actress Tracee Ellis Ross, and four grandchildren. Roker was an inspiration to many and will be remembered for being a voice of strength and a spirit of excellence.
