Sir Roger Scruton (1944 - 2020) passed away peacefully on January 12, 2020 at the age of 75. He was an English philosopher who specialised in aesthetics, political philosophy and the philosophy of education. Scruton gained a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy, politics and economics from Jesus College, Oxford in 1966 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1974 with his thesis on aesthetics and political theory. He was associated with the university throughout his career, holding a number of visiting appointments at Oxford, Stanford and Harvard. Scruton was a regular contributor to the academic world and was highly regarded for his work, being appointed Fellow of the British Academy in 1999 and made a knight bachelor for services to philosophy, teaching and public education in 2016. He wrote over 50 books and was seen as an influential conservative thinker. He achieved great recognition for his platform of traditional moral values and campaigned regularly against the modern preoccupations with political correctness. Respected and appreciated by many, he will be remembered for his dedication and commitment to furthering philosophical thought in the 21st century.
