Rocky Marciano, the world famous heavyweight boxing champion of the 1950s, died on August 31, 1969. He was 45 years old. Marciano's reign as world champion spanned from 1952 until his retirement in 1956, during which he asserted complete domination of the heavyweight division with an incredible win record of 49-0. His career included 43 knock-outs, which earned him the nickname "The Brockton Blockbuster." Born in Brockton, Massachusetts on September 1, 1923, Marciano began boxing during his service in the Army, where he reached the rank of sergeant. The rest of his career was built on his signature fighting style of using relentless close-in punching to overpower and overwhelm his opponents. His most notable victories include his 1952 win against contender Jersey Joe Walcott, and a 1955 rematch against former world champion Ezzard Charles. Marciano is remembered for his incredible power, agility, and heart, which he always showed inside of the ropes. His influence on the sport of boxing is incalculable, and he will be remembered as one of the greatest of all time.
