On July 15, 1940, Robert Wadlow, renowned as the tallest person in recorded history, passed away in Manistee, Michigan at the age of 22. A native of Alton, Illinois, Robert Wadlow was born on February 22, 1918. His impressive height of 8 feet 11 inches was the result of an overactive pituitary gland; he was diagnosed with hypertrichosis at an early age. Despite his size, Robert remained active throughout his childhood, lifting weights and playing all types of sports. Robert soon became known around his-hometown, leading to frequent invitations to appear at public events. In June 1936, he attended the International Shoe Company’s national sales convention as their “Giant Spokesman.” Throughout his teens, he toured the country in a quest to raise public awareness about health and physical fitness. In August 1940, Robert was fitted with a special pair of braces to help him walk. Following this, he developed an infection in his ankle which severely limited his movement. Robert Wadlow died two weeks after the fitting, due to complications from a severe infection. He was survived by his parents, Harold and Addie Wadlow, and four siblings.
