It is with a heavy heart that we announce the death of Robert Mugabe, African liberation hero, patriot, former President of Zimbabwe, and the nation's founding father, on September 6, 2019 at the age of 95. A prominent figure in Zimbabwean history, Robert was born on February 21, 1924 and attended Kutama College before continuing his education at the University of Fort Hare in South Africa. After working as a tutor and then a clerk in 1952, he became actively involved in politics by effectively leading the Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU). In 1960, Robert co-founded the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) with the purpose of overthrowing white minority rule. He was arrested in 1964 and eventually released from a Rhodesian jail in 1974. In 1980, Robert led the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) and its then ruling party, the Zimbabwe African National Union--Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) to power. During his presidency, he made strides in improving the country’s economy, infrastructure, education, healthcare, and defense sectors. Robert remained in office for 38 years until resigning in 2017 due to mounting pressure from the nation's citizens. He leaves behind a legacy of selfless dedication to the struggle for African liberty, sovereignty and dignity. He is survived by his wife, Grace, and four children.
