On June 5, 2023, Robert Hanssen, age 79, passed away peacefully at his home in Fairfax, Virginia. Hanssen was born in Goodland, Gary, Indiana, the son of Howard and Vivian Hanssen and was raised in the Catholic Church. After graduating from Marist High School, he joined the United States Army, where he served in the Signal Corps for four years and worked as detailer for the assistant secretary of the US Army. He later pursued a degree in Accounting and Information Systems from Northwestern University and also earned a Master of Business Administration degree from George Washington University. Robert began his professional career at the U.S. Postal Service in 1972. In 1976, he accepted a position with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which would be his professional home for the next 25 years. Robert served the FBI with distinction in an array of roles, most notably as the head of the bureau’s counterintelligence operations in its National Security Division. Robert leaves behind his wife, Bernadette, and his four children: Michael, Sarah, Paul and Timothy. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren. Robert Hanssen was widely respected by peers and colleagues and will be deeply missed.
