With profound sadness, we mark the passing of Robert Baden-Powell, 1st Baron Baden-Powell, who died on January 8, 1941 in London, England at the age of 83. A prolific, influential military leader and author, Baron Baden-Powell was born in Paddington, London in 1857. After a period of military service in India, Africa, and other Commonwealth countries, Baden-Powell retired from military duty in 1906 and devoted the rest of his life to writing, public speaking, and youth engagement. Best remembered as the founder of the Scout and Guide movements, Baron Baden-Powell organized the first Boys Scout gathering in 1907 at Brownsea Island, initiating a global call to action for youth engagement which has resonated throughout the years. He also wrote numerous books, including Scouting for Boys (1908) and Rovering to Success (1920). He was invested as a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath in 1910 and raised to the Peerage in 1922 as Baron Baden-Powell, of Gilwell. He was predeceased by his wife, Olave Baden-Powell. We send our deepest condolences to his family during this difficult time.
