Actor Robert Alda, renowned for his performances in Broadway musicals, film, and television, passed away on May 3, 1986 at 72 years old. Alda gained his initial fame as a musical-theater performer, notably as George Gershwin in the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical 'Crazy for You.' His leading roles in 'Pal Joey' and 'What Makes Sammy Run' earned him Tony Award noms for best actor. Alda also appeared in 'Guys and Dolls' as Sky Masterson and 'La Strada' as Zampano. In his Hollywood career, Alda earned Academy Award and Golden Globe noms for his performances in the critically-acclaimed 'The Purple Rose of Cairo' and 'Ginger and Fred.' He also went on to star in the TV versions of 'Guys and Dolls' and 'The Boys from Syracuse.' Alda is remembered fondly by all who knew him and those who enjoyed decades of his celebrated acting contributions. He is survived by his two children, actor Alan Alda and Antony Alda.
