On March 22, 2016, Toronto and Canada lost a political icon when Rob Ford passed away due to an abdominal tumor. He was 46 years old. Rob was a successful Canadian politician and businessman, who was born in Etobicoke, Toronto in 1969. In 2003, Rob was elected as a Councillor in Toronto's municipal government. In 2010, he became the mayor of Toronto, an office he held until 2014. During his tenure as mayor, he achieved some of Toronto's greatest successes, and he is remembered for his commitment to reducing and controlling the city's spending. Rob was also known for his more controversial and scandalous moments, including the infamous crack cocaine incident which thrust him into the international spotlight. Despite these and other controversies, he was respected and beloved by many of his constituents. Rob Ford will be remembered for his larger-than-life personality, his commitment to the people of Toronto, and his courage in the face of adversity. He was predeceased by his father, Doug Ford Sr. and his brother Doug Ford Jr. He leaves behind his wife Renata, sons Stephen and Dougie, daughter Stephanie, mother Diane Ford, and brother Randy. He will be dearly missed by his friends, family and city.
