On 18 June 1928, Roald Amundsen, renowned Norwegian explorer and leader of the first Antarctic expedition to reach the South Pole, died at the age of 55. Roald was born in 1872 in Borge, Norway. His passion for exploration and discovery led to many significant achievements throughout his life. He was part of the first exploration of the Northwest Passage, and made several other renowned voyages and studies. In 1911, Roald achieved the remarkable feat of being the first person to reach the South Pole. Despite harsh conditions, he and his crew completed the journey successfully and returned to Norway to a hero's welcome. Other exclusive feats throughout Roald's career included flying over the North Pole in 1925, and crossing the Arctic in the airship Norge in 1926. His work was widely acclaimed in the literary world, and he authored several books about his triumphs. He continued to make many significant contributions to exploration and training, before his death in 1958. He will be remembered as an explorer of great skill and courage, and as a pioneer of polar exploration.
