Former US President Richard Milhous Nixon, the 37th president of the United States and the only one to ever resign from office, died on April 22, 1994, at the age of 81. Born January 9, 1913 in Yorba Linda, California, Nixon rose to prominence as a member of the US Navy during World War II, serving in the Pacific. Following the war, he was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1946, and then eight years later he was elected to the US Senate. In 1952, he was elected as Dwight Eisenhower's running mate and they went on to serve two terms as President and Vice President. Nixon won the 1968 presidential election and then won a second term in 1972, becoming the first and only president to be reelected for two consecutive terms. However, his presidency was marked by the Watergate scandal, where it was discovered that several members of his administration were involved in illegal activities. He resigned in August 1974 and devoted the rest of his life to private pursuits including writing several books about his political career. He is survived by his two daughters, Patricia Nixon Cox and Julie Nixon Eisenhower, four grandchildren, and two brothers.
