On August 6, 1945, the world lost honored aviator and Medal of Honor recipient, Richard Bong. Richard was born on September 24, 1920, in the small town of Poplar, Wisconsin. He attended Superior State Teachers College in Wisconsin, and later enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps in 1941, shortly after the United States entered World War II. Richard stood out among his peers, rapidly rising to the level of pilot. He flew the popular P-38 Lighting aircraft in various Pacific operations, gaining the nickname of the “Ace of Aces” due to his impressive record of 40 confirmed air victories. He was awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest decoration an American serviceman can receive, for his exemplary record in 1944. Despite his achievements, Richard had no wish to stay in the military, and received a discharge request in 1945. Tragically, his request was denied, and he was due to take part in a final training mission. Sadly, Richard’s plane crashed during the mission and he was killed in the accident. Richard will be remembered for his brave service and numerous achievements, and his memory will live on through his legacy of military excellence. He will be deeply missed by all his family and friends.
