Belgian artist René Magritte passed away on August 15, 1967 at the age of 68. Born on November 21, 1898 in Lessines, Belgium, Magritte showed an early interest in art, and was encouraged to pursue his studies at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. Throughout his career, Magritte experimented with many artistic styles, from symbolism to surrealism. He was most known for his surrealist work, which often featured reoccurring themes such as clouds, beehives, bowler hats and men in overcoats. His works were highly influential in the art community of his time and since, striking a balance between irony and imagination. Magritte is regarded not only as one of the most celebrated Belgian Surrealist artists in history, but also as one of the most important figures in 20th century art. Alongside his artwork, he wrote several essays exploring the fundamental nature of reality and the purpose of art. Magritte's legacy will remain through his work, his essays and his contribution to the exploration of the body of art. His iconic works of art will continue to be enjoyed and remembered for many generations to come.
