Raymond Daniel Manzarek Jr., 74, passed away on May 20, 2013, following a battle with bile duct cancer. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, on February 12, 1939. Ray enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in early 1959. It was during this time that he developed an interest in the church organ. After honing his skills on church organs, he moved to Los Angeles where he enrolled in the University of California and majored in film. It was in 1964, after meeting fellow student Jim Morrison, that Ray formed what would become one of the most iconic American rock bands ever, The Doors. As the keyboardist and co-founder of The Doors, Ray shaped the sound of the band and was integral in their success. He wrote or co-wrote much of the band's material, including hits such as "Light My Fire" and "People Are Strange." Apart from The Doors, Ray enjoyed a successful solo career working on several soundtrack albums and eventually formed the band Manzarek-Krieger. Ray's influence will be felt for generations to come. Ray is survived by his wife Dorothy and four sons. He will be deeply missed by his family and fans around the world.
